Objective Achieved !

I left Concrete, Washington, early this morning and proceeded on highway 20. Deer and elk were abundant and in one instance, when five bull elk were crossing the road, they collided with a small vehicle. There seemingly was no serious damage although I did see the wheels go over one of the elk's legs. Seemingly no worse for wear, it jumped right up and ran off... perhaps since the car was so light it did no serious damage. It was a very close encounter and I'm sure the driver, a young girl, will not soon forget the incident. SLOW DOWN!
First viewing of the Pacific

Strait of Juan de Fuca
From Concrete it was on to Sedro-Woolley, Bayview and then my objective, Anacortes. From Anacortes I proceeded on to Whidbey Island where I had stunning views of not only the island itself but the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Saratoga Passage, Admiralty Inlet, and Mt. Rainier. Beautiful country and tonight I'm staying in Rhododendron Park. This was not my original destination, but it was too pretty to pass up and I have the entire campground to myself. Tomorrow I will ride to the ferry, go to the mainland, and meet up with my daughter and her family. That will mark the end of the trip. Very satisfying!
The prize for completing the trip

Tomorrow, Traveler and I will hang up our spurs. She has been a trustworthy, reliable bicycle throughout our trip across United States.

  Last dinner of the trip

Thought I would take a picture of breakfast on my last day. It's pretty typical of what I ate while on the road when traveling alone. On those occasions when there was a restaurant close by I had eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and all those wonderful things. Just something to fill the void was all that was needed and the stove offered warmth on cold mornings.

  1. Steve, I'll bet you know how Lewis & Clark felt when they got THEIR first glimpse of the Pacific! Well done to you and your faithful companion, Traveler (who says you can't fall in love w/a bucket of bolts & some rubber tires), at least you didn't have to shoot him when he was limping along there for awhile! I join w/your sweet family & friends in complementing you on completing your soul-searching journey & finding the peace you sought at it's ending. I hope you know that it is because of faithful, decent, kind & loving people such as you that keeps America live & well...those people you've met on this trip are just a reflection of YOUR soul. I hope your day's will now be filled w/hugs, kisses, sunshine & flowers & Watkin's liniment. I w/miss connecting w/you each day & wish you God's richest blessings. You certainly deserve them. My family & I thank you & your fellow countrymen for your unselfish service to America & want you to know that you w/all hold a special place in our hearts forever. Thank you. Your white dove, Jan T.

  2. Steve,
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... What a tremendous accomplishment and for all of us that got the privilege and pleasure to share it, we are truly inspired.... Thank YOU for bringing all of us a different perspective of our great nation through your words, wit and humor... Personally I am so grateful for the time we shared and the friendship forged ... so again ... thank you... And of course, Thank you Andrea!!!!!... you are the person who supported this effort and brought us Steve's story ... There is not much a man cannot do when he has a strong beautiful woman at his side...You two do make a great team....

You began this journey with a personal mission and as you traveled from town to town you touched peoples lives in a way that let them share their real and true spirit to someone who was genuinely interested in 'them'... what you feel you 'got' from the people of America, you actually 'gave' back to them through your friendly demeanor and kind spirit... Well done my friend.... you have enriched so many.... I look forward to growing this new friendship ... Will be in touch..
